Brooke Combe swaggers onto the stage with a fiery confidence alike to artists who have been touring for decades, the Scottish songstress warmed up the stage for Miles Kane, who has undeniably given her the platform to impress on his latest tour. Combes powerful vocals clearly impressed the audience, who by the end of the set, were infatuated by the soulful woman who set the stage alight with pure magnetism. Reminiscent of the likes of Winehouse or 90’s Rockettes lyrically, Brookes onstage presence was something to behold and although I was not introduced to her music until days before the show, it was something incredibly exciting, considering the 6 songs she has out currently, and certainly something to keep an eye on. Although simple in arrangement, with Combe on vocals and rhythm guitar, surrounded by bass, drummer and lead guitar, she let her voice do all the talking, and it is no surprise that she has amassed a legion of loyal fans online, from her empowering Scottish charm. Songs that stuck out clearly to both the audience and myself were “Miss me” a compelling song about old flames and remembering the past, which sticks with you for the rest of the night. Her thrilling Artic Monkeys cover was truly a highlight, putting a focus onto the diversity of her range and also proving she can swing straight from soul into rock at the drop of a hat. Another must listen she performed was ‘impress you” which was easily my favourite of all her songs out at the moment, underlining the suffocation women feel in society as a whole, which again, proves Combe is a force to be reckoned with, as she takes on the challenge of singing something impactful and society defining, as opposed to your average love song that so many artists can’t seem to escape from. After the show, I spoke some brief words with Brooke, as did many of the crowd, once more proving that she deserves the growing fanbase, her confidence whilst performing translating to off the stage. Brooke is truly one to watch, and I am excited to see what the future brings for the Edinburgh born artist.
