You Are Cordially Invited: The Last Dinner Party Live

On March 29th, 2024, The Last Dinner Party gracefully took the – sold-out – MTelus stage for their first time performing in Canada, accompanied by Miss Grit opening for them. Formed in 2021, the five-piece women/nonbinary British band includes Abigail Morris (vocals), Lizzie Mayland (vocals, guitar), Emily Roberts (lead guitar, mandolin, flute), Georgia Davies (bass), as well as Aurora Nishevci (keyboards, vocals).

Following a very campy, dark-romantic dress code such as silk bows, puffed sleeves and long skirts, fans were screaming their hearts out once the very first note of the classical opener “Prelude To Ecstasy could be heard – The Last Dinner Party slowly starting to appear on stage. The band then kicked off the dinner party with a magnetic and strong performance of “Burned Alive”, followed by “Ceasar on a TV Screen”. The latter is probably one of the most theatrical songs out of their debut and only record,Prelude To Ecstasy” (2024). The energy in the entire venue was palpable in the entire venue as Abigail let the crowd sing the meaningful lyrics “Do you feel like a man when I can’t talk back?”, during “The Feminine Urge” (a personal favourite), which was the third song of the night.

Even if the band has only been performing together for a relatively short time, all you can think about while they are rocking it on stage is how mesmerizing they are while they play together. Abigail’s stage presence is undeniably captivating, reminiscent of a theatre performance taking place in front of your eyes. Anyone can easily tell this band is made to be on stage because of their passion, their aesthetic, and their community.

The Last Dinner Party proceeded to enthrall the crowd throughout the night, playing other songs from their album, such as “Sinner”, “Portrait of a Dead Girl”, and a powerful rendition of “Wicked Game” by Chris Isaak. As the fans were eagerly waiting for Abigail, Lizzie, Emily, Georgia, and Aurora to come back on stage for their encore, they kept screaming for more – eventually starting the iconic Montreal “Ohé ohé ohé” chant, the stumping of their feet echoed throughout the whole packed venue.

The Last Dinner ended this magic night with “My Lady of Mercy and of course, none other than their debut single “Nothing Matters (2023). As Morris introduced the song, she said “Just remember, nothing matters”, and the crowd cheered once more. This Montreal concert felt historic, a celebration of girlhood and art, and it left a lasting impression on all those in attendance.

You can still catch The Last Dinner Party on their 2024 North American tour with special guest Miss Grit until August 7th, before they embark on their 2024 UK and Ireland tour from September 23rd to October 16th. Last but certainly not least, you can bring donations for multiple organizations of their choice in exchange for a The Last Dinner Party ribbon throughout their North American shows.
