Christoph Schultz & David John Levy - Unprocessed
Press time 2:10pm Saturday
N: First off thank you for agreeing to sit down with us at Renegade. Obviously your set yesterday was one of the big moments of the festival so far and had a few firsts to record, first band to bring your own backdrop for the production, the first “Blegh” of the weekend, and the first big crowd interaction with having everyone hold up their phone torches, is this show something you guys saw as a big moment for the band being able to come back over for this show?
Christoph: “100%. To be honest, Radar festival in general has marked some pretty significant milestones for our band’s history. Before as well, because we played the first edition in 2019 and that set was insane as well. So we had high expectations already coming back, and that has been met for sure. I Think in general we do the “Phones up” thing on many shows, its good to gauge how invested the crowd is”
N: It's always a winner right? It must feel great obviously with the band having now been around for a minute right? Formed in 2013, is that right?
Christoph: “That's true, but it has kind of had like a 2nd birth in the band in 2017 with the Covenant record”
N: So with that tenure, in terms of the way you guys deal with shows, there’s been that quite substantial change with the sound of the band over time. Do you find there’s particular ways you’ll get pumped depending on the types of bands you’re on tour with? For example Spiritbox Vs your own headliner must be two different vibes
Christoph: “Its mainly the length of the set that would just determine the songs that we play. We always try to have a high energy level, most or all of the time. Even though we have “Dead Rose” and “Rain” which are super calm songs, for the most part. It's just always about finding a good balance. I think that the funny thing is when you listen through our discography you’d think like “Of these guys changed so much” but when we play from the different albums it all comes together really well”
N: It really does. I mean obviously you’ve also got the big tour coming up with Tessaract as well, how’re we feeling about that?
David: “Super stoked, it's a great opportunity. I think we’re all super happy that it came along. It’s 31 shows, we’re playing 45 minutes on that one”
N: You’re also touring with Callous Daoboys there as well, have you had much crossover with them over time or is this just coming about now?
Christoph: “Not really, I heard of them when the tour got announced and checked them out”
David: “Same here. They seem really cool, it makes sense, its a great lineup”
N: Well, as well there it was the first US headliner tour, how did we feel about that? Did that feel like it was a big moment, or was it something to take in stride?
Christoph: “Well it was sort of a dual tour? We played support shows with Polyphia, and then this run was rather short, so to make the most of the flights we booked headline shows around it, played of off days, so it was really to get our foot into headlining in the states, and I think the reaction to it was really good.”
N: Did you think there’s a particular departure in terms of playing the US shows vs European crowds
David: Definitely a big difference, I feel like that the UK and the US are the markets that are wild. I think they are way more progressive in their reception to music whereas in Germany and mainland Europe you always need a bit more time to introduce a new thing to the market. It kind of needs to work in the UK and US first. So we came the US and its our strongest market digitally, and it was crazy to see all these fans of ours that have been around for years and never got to see us live, it was a very sick experience
N: Obviously we’re coming up on a year since releasing Gold, in terms of the touring cycle since bringing that record out, how have you felt in term of how its integrated into live shows?
Christoph: “Honestly, the whole “Gold” phase was so weird because of Covid, you didn’t know when the album would be out and and then how many shows did we play since then? Probably close to close to a hundred? So it was the first real touring cycle in that regard”
N: Oh of course! I didn’t even think of that, its like it never happened
Christoph: “Well because we just got spat out of the pandemic and then we were on stages again and like everything, to put it that way, was crazy, I'm really grateful that we did everything we did in the past year
N: Is there anything else you still wanted to get out of touring this album?
David:”I think for now we’ve played the most markets with it. The next steps for us will be with different stuff”
N: That's my next question actually. In terms of how you guys are approaching what to do next? How are you guys feeling in terms of that process?
David: There’s definitely an amazing project coming up on our side and it’ll be out sooner than you think. But we don’t wanna spill too much
N: I can understand completely there, no worries. So when reading up on Unprocessed there's’ been mention of bands like Iron Maiden and Metallica as influences, but in terms of how your style has changed over time, is there anything you’d say is an influence now that wasn’t one in the past?
David: “I think I have a good take on that, for sure we all have our influences, with Gold there was a big pop influence obviously. Because in the pandemic I would just listen to pop a lot, we liked it, but I think ultimately the goal is to just be known as “Unprocessed”, because we have a whole load of influences, like movie soundtracks and industrial stuff, stuff like that y'know?
N: Thats funny, because that's my next question again. So in particular when I listen to the song ‘Portrait’ it seems kind of tailor made for something on TV or film. Kind of a devil's advocate question, is there anything that has influenced the way you’ve written? Anything you’ve been really into?
Christoph: “I think Manu is big on that. The whole atmospheric side of our music is basically movie soundtracks”
N: I’ve actually got down that I reminded me a little bit of ‘The Shining’
David: The Shining, Silent Hill for example, with the new stuff, personally it gives me a lot of american horror story vibes as well? So there’s definitely a lot of cinematic stuff. Also just Hans Zimmer compositions and like boiling it down to the essence, giving the music the most concise information possible
N: Just to bring it back around to you guys, I’ve got that it's nearing the 10 year anniversary of In Concretion, is that something the group has discussed if you would come back to that?
David: “We have never thought about it but I think the record that will get the 10 year anniversary tour is Covenant because thats when we were fully together with the intent we have now. But we should do something.”
Christoph:” I would love to play some songs off that record, although I wasn’t in the band I still love it?”
N: It's amazing to know you guys are down for that as well. In terms of how the group felt about the set yesterday, were there any particular high points?
Christoph: “Its the first time being back in the UK since Covid. So that's a high point in itself i think. Shows in the UK for us are always super sick”
David: “And the end of our set as well!”
Christoph: “Yeah, the moment we asked for crowd surfers and then just like 20 popped up st the same time”
N: That was great, there’s not been many so far this weekend, I think its how you guys brought something out in the crowd yesterday, in terms a lot of it I felt it was a highlight for the day
David: “We really enjoyed it, and we’re so thankful for the people who brought us over here. It's been an amazing experience yesterday, hands down. That's not something we just say. Christoph:”Among our top 3 shows here for sure”
N: I love that. Just to wrap up though, is there any message you want to part with for the fans?
David: “Just keep your eyes on our channels…
Christoph: “Thanks for the support, thanks everyone for showing up, its just great to be back in the UK”
